Welcome to the internest of Ben McKenzie, Melbourne-based actor, comedian, writer, feminist, improviser, voiceover artist, presenter, game mechanic, scientician, rogue nerd and ginger.
‘Geek comedy’s patron saint’ (T-Squat magazine), Ben writes and performs live comedy, including sketches, comedy lectures, the hit live Doctor Who podcast Splendid Chaps, and Dungeons & Dragons-inspired improvised comedy Dungeon Crawl. His current projects include his new solo comedy show Ben McKenzie is Uncool for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and audio sci-fi comedy series Night Terrace, for which he is co-writer, co-producer and co-star.
It should come as no surprise that Ben loves games; he is co-founder of livegames company Pop Up Playground, where he has designed games including Spy Catcher, The Curse, The Whispering Society, The Focal Point and The Ride, and worked with the Freeplay Independent Games Festival since 2012. He has also appeared on the Boxcutters television podcast as resident fact checker, and has a couple of other podcast projects in the works.
His favourite dinosaur is Stegosaurus.
Here on the site you can find details of Ben’s appearances, along with blog posts featuring his musings on life, the Universe and everything. (Yeah, he loves Douglas Adams as well.)
“There’s no wrong way to be a Doctor Who fan!”
“Yes there is, Ben, and it’s your way.”
- Ben McKenzie and John Richards, Splendid Chaps podcast
“We use this: a twenty-sided die! The nerdiest kind of dice known to humankind.” - Ben McKenzie hosting the improvised comedy show Dungeon Crawl
“I will be your Dungeon Master for tonight – no, not the kind with whips and chains, the kind with dice and a copy of the Monster Manual.”
“Cool is dispassionate; geek culture makes passion a virtue. We like things as hard and as loud as we can. We want to share that love, so we wear our passion on T-shirts, shout it from the rooftops, type it on Tumblr until our fingers bleed.” – Ben McKenzie is Uncool
